GRADE 6 - HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY

6th Grade History & Geography travels to exciting places and fascinating civilizations from the ancient world to our world today. Engaging topics include a comprehensive overview of the geographical features, natural resources, and cultures of 13 dynamically diverse countries in South America, as well as a study of the regions of Africa.


This online course also studies ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, and a review of the culture, conflicts, and impact of major world regions. In addition, the history and major conflicts of Western Europe are studied along with the culture and governments of Eastern Europe.

GRADE 6 - LANGUAGE ARTS

In 6th Grade Language Arts, students delve into texts that span the genres of narrative fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and informational texts to build reading, writing, and thinking skills. Students also develop their writing skills as they focus on the six traits while producing narrative, argumentative, and explanatory compositions, as well as creative pieces including poetry. The course concludes with students completing a full research report.


With a strong emphasis on close reading instruction, writing and thinking activities, as well as speaking and listening tasks, this online course helps students expand their understanding of literature while building 21st century skills. Multimedia and interactive elements are built into every lesson to ensure a high-level of student engagement.

GRADE 6 - MATH

Focusing on the skills needed for algebra, 6th Grade Math gives students experience with number theory and operations, including decimals and fractions. This course also integrates ratio relationships and proportional reasoning throughout the units, as well as introduces students to geometric and statistical concepts.


Students who complete this 11-unit, online course can calculate problems with decimal numbers, solve problems involving fractions, use ratios, rates, and percentages to solve problems, describe data presented in various graphs, and much more.

GRADE 6 - SCIENCE

6th Grade Science is an intermediate course intended to expose students to the designs and patterns in the physical universe. This online course covers the study of plant and animal systems, plant and animal behavior, genetics, the structure of matter, light and sound, kinematics, planet earth, the solar system, and astronomy.


Students at this level should begin to understand interrelationships between organisms, recognize patterns in ecosystems, and become aware of the cellular dimensions of living systems. Collectively, this should help students develop and build on their subject-matter knowledge base.

GRADE 6 - SPELLING

6th Grade Spelling is a 30-week course of instruction that practices phonics skills, including vowel pairs and digraphs. Course units also include significant incorporation of word parts such as prefixes and suffixes. Units include review of Greek and Latin roots, compound words, and homophones.


Each unit contains five short assignments per week that can be taught as a stand-alone course or can easily integrate with the Calvert 6th Grade Language Arts curriculum. Lessons and projects include multimedia to support the content, as well as incorporation of rubrics for clear assessment.

GRADE 7 - HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY

WORLD CIVILIZATIONS

World Civilizations examines the growth of human society from our earliest beginnings to the present. Students study topics including agricultural societies, ancient civilizations, empires, trade, and migration. The year-long course also features practice in researching, using technology, and writing through various projects.


In addition to the default course program, World Civilization includes alternate lessons, projects, essays, and tests for use in enhancing instruction or addressing individual needs.

GRADE 7 - LANGUAGE ARTS

7th Grade Language Arts engages students in a thematic study of literature that explores accounts of earth, space, and survival and delves into texts that span the genres of narrative fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and informational texts. Students demonstrate their understanding of various works by analyzing how common themes like exploration, innovation, and courage are able to transcend diverse time periods and genres.


This online course also develops students’ writing skills as they focus on the six traits of writing while producing argumentative, narrative, and expository compositions. With a strong emphasis on close reading instruction, research activities, and speaking and listening tasks, this course helps students expand their understanding of literature while building twenty-first century skills. To become critical consumers of text, students are exposed to increasingly more complex texts to which they apply those skills, including high-quality contemporary works, the classics of American literature, and the timeless dramas of Shakespeare.

GRADE 7 - MATH

7th Grade Math prepares junior-high students for pre-algebra. This online course focuses on strengthening critical skills in problem solving, number sense, and proportional reasoning. It also introduces students to integers, equations, and geometric concepts.


Throughout the course students begin to see the "big picture" of mathematics and learn how numeric, algebraic, and geometric concepts are woven together to build a foundation for higher mathematical thinking.

GRADE 7 - SCIENCE

7th Grace Science covers the scientific method, an overview of the four major areas of science, mathematics in science, astronomy, the atmosphere, natural cycles, weather and climate, human anatomy and physiology, and careers in science. The curriculum seeks to develop the students' ability to be aware of and participate in scientific inquiry. The units contain experiments and projects to capitalize on the students’ natural curiosity, as students explore, observe and manipulate everyday objects and materials in their environment.

GRADE 8 - HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY

8th Grade History & Geography focuses on American history, covering early exploration through the present day, with special emphasis given to the Civil War, as well as to inventions and technology of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These areas of focus target the major content strands of history, geography, government and citizenship.


Additionally, students gain practice in research and writing, covering topics like explorers, the 13 colonies, famous battles, the U.S. Constitution, western expansion, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, propaganda, citizenship, and inventors. Alternate lessons, projects, and tests also are available for use in enhancing instruction or addressing individual needs.

GRADE 8 - LANGUAGE ARTS

8th Grade Language Arts is a survey of literature that explores a range of classic and contemporary literature to convey themes of American history, natural history, world civilization, and air and space. Students also develop writing skills while producing informative, argumentative, and narrative compositions.


Supported by a balance of fictional and informational texts, this online course helps students learn and practice close reading, modeled reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies. To become critical consumers of text, students also are exposed to increasingly more complex texts to apply those skills, including high-quality contemporary works, the classics of American literature, and Homer’s Iliad.

GRADE 8 - MATH

8th Grade Math is an introductory algebra course that prepares junior-high school students for Algebra I. This online course focuses on strengthening skills in problem solving, integers, equations, and graphing. Students also begin to see the "big picture" of mathematics and learn how numeric, algebraic, and geometric concepts are woven together to build a foundation for higher mathematical thinking.


Throughout the course, students explore different properties of numbers and how to use them to simplify expressions and formulas to make computations easier. Additional topics include modeling problems in integers, modeling problems with rational numbers, proportional reasoning, data analysis, probability, and more.

GRADE 8 - SCIENCE

8th Grace Science is an intermediate course that covers the structure and properties of matter, measurement and mathematics of science, geology, oceanography, natural cycles and resources, science today and tomorrow, and astronomy. The curriculum seeks to develop students' ability to be aware of and participate in scientific inquiry, while experiments and projects are designed to capitalize on students’ natural curiosity.


Students at this level should show an understanding of interrelationships between organisms and the environment, recognize patterns in systems, and expand their knowledge of cellular dimensions of living systems.
